A healthy mind and body has an impact on every area of your life. Good physical and mental health lead to increased happiness, better productivity, inspiration and motivation, and can contribute to greater success at work, relationships and family life.
Here are seven simple things you can do every day to keep your mind and body healthy.
Laughter really is the best medicine. Make it a priority to spend time with friends and family who make you laugh, and take time off just to do the things you enjoy doing. A stash of funny DVDs or books is cheaper than therapy and quicker to access. I advise turning off technology at least an hour before bedtime to get a good night’s sleep, but make the last thing you look at online a funny video or perhaps a website that posts funny quotes.
Celebrate your successes and achievements, and even your near misses. Celebrate being alive. Give yourself a pat on the back, do a happy dance, say a huge thank you to the universe or any spiritual being you believe in. End each day with a small ritual (it can be as simple as a hot bath or a warm cup of cocoa) and a personal reflection that celebrates what you’ve achieved today.
#3 Get some fresh air and sunshine
In addition to simply renewing your spirit, sunshine affects your hormones in a positive manner. In fact, your body needs a bit of vitamin D produced by sunshine to operate optimally. If you can’t position your office and desk to enjoy some natural sunlight throughout the day, make sure you get outside for twenty or so minutes each day.
#4 Calm the mind
Meditation has long been proven to not only lengthen your life but to also improve quality of life. And the good news for those who cannot seem to sit still for more than five minutes is that meditation can be accomplished while walking and moving too. Learn more about meditation and try to integrate it into your day for better mental health.
#5 Schedule time to play
Scheduling fun sounds, well, unfun. But if you don’t schedule it, you may not do it. Make time every day for activities you enjoy. Mine include reading fiction, drawing, archery, and yoga. You can commit to a regular class or club night and make sure you attend, but you can also commit to a daily yoga practice or a 20 minute reading or sketching session right in your own home.
Schedule days off, days out, a meal or coffee with friends, or a Skype chat with a faraway loved one. Play a board game with your kids, a game of pool with friends, or consider starting a creativity club, to encourage you to include a little creative play every day.
Exercise is good for both your mind and your body. Find an activity or two that you enjoy doing: swimming, running, climbing, tennis, riding your bike - you name it. And make time to do something every day. Even walking for 15 minutes or doing a few toning exercises at home is enough to help you stay in shape.
#7 Make sure your work space is as ergonomic as possible
That includes a good ergonomic chair to support your back, a desk that’s at an appropriate level to support your wrists and a computer screen that doesn’t hurt your eyes. Good lighting also makes a huge difference.
In order to live a full, happy and fulfilling life, it’s important to make your mental and physical health a priority every day.
